WINTER STORM

JANUARY 6, 2009 (TUES) 5:41 PM

SNOW/SLEET/FREEZING RAIN/RAIN

COMMENTS: We started off with snow and it has been mixing with snow and sleet. The ground temperature is below freezing but above us it is getting warmer. This will cause it to mix with sleet and freezing rain throughout the night. We will not see much more snow out of this storm, but we will see plenty of ice. Eventually in the valley we will switch to all rain sometime tomorrow morning.

SNOW:
Totals here will be under or around an inch.

ICE: A tenth to a half inch in some spots.

CONDITIONS: Icy travel on untreated and side roads. Ice on cold object such as cars, trees, telephone poles, railings, steps, driveways, etc.

SCHOOL: We will see delays and or closings in our area. It is always tough to predict what the valley schools will do. Remember this is NOT the type of storm that we can say their will be 6 inches of snow on the roads. We are dealing with an ice storm. A lot of it is up to the crews that salt the roads. So far today I have seen many salt trucks treating the roads here. Also a lot of it is up to when it changes to all rain. In the valley we have mixed views on whether it will last as an icy mix all night and switch late tomorrow morning, or will it switch over sometime during the night hours. The early change over to some sleet is making me think that the warm air will work into our area faster, and change us over to rain faster. This is a very tough call for us, but we are thinking at least a delay tomorrow. I am not 100% sure with this call. Once again, we can't tell you what the school district will do, but we can tell you the weather that will come our way. This is tougher for us then the school districts, because they can wait to see the conditions, but we have to predict them.
